INFORMATION BUBBLE

WHAT IS AN INFORMATION BUBBLE?

An information bubble is a state of intellectual isolation that can result from personalized search, where a website algorithm selectively guesses what information a user would like to see based on user information such as location, previous clicks, and search history.

HOW INFORMATION BUBBLES DISTORT REALITY: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

We find ourselves in an information bubble whenever we are surrounded only by views and opinions with which we agree, and at the same time protected from opposing views. Information bubbles distort our understanding of the world and prevent us from making informed decisions.

WHY ARE INFORMATION BUBBLES HARMFUL?

After a while, seeing only the results they agree with, people begin to believe that they are more correct, and then their views become stronger and stronger. This means that if someone disagrees with them, their views are likely to be polarized. As a result, these people are more likely to agree with each other or even talk to each other.

INFORMATION BUBBLE AND GROUP PSYCHOLOGY

We have a desire to be close to people like us and to strengthen our worldview. Our online behavior is no different. People form groups based on interests, location, employment, affiliation and other details. Within groups (even if members never meet each other) beliefs are strengthened. Dissenters can be excluded from the community. Sociologists call such behavior "general reinforcement" and emphasize that some ideas have nothing to do with reality.

HOW CAN WE AVOID THE INFORMATION BUBBLE?

1. Use browser extensions that block ads.

2. Read news sites and blogs that offer a wide range of opinions.

3. Pay attention to entertainment education.

4. Use incognito viewing, clear your search history, and stay logged if possible.
